Most people will judge you within the first second of meeting you and their opinion will most likely never change. Making a good first impression is incredibly important, because you only get one shot at it. Studies show that people can make incredibly accurate judgments in a tenth of a second. So how can we ensure people are judging us accurately and also seeing our best side?
The most important thing to do for giving a good impression is to set your intention. Who do you want to meet and what interactions do you want? This will allow you to really focus your energy and ultimately help you achieve your outcome.
Think about your appearance.
Clothes, make-up, jewellery, watches and shoes are all things people take into account when they are making their initial judgement of you. What are your clothes and accessories saying about you? What do you want them to say?
Be aware of your body language.
Body language is a crucial part of first impressions. Think about your posture and how you carry yourself. Think about how you greet someone. Are you aware of where you are looking? Is your eye contact appropriate? Keep in mind the way you shake hands. This is a key moment where you will be judged.
Don’t allow your bad day to impact on the way you present yourself. If you are in a depressed or anxious mood, others will pick up on this from your facial expressions, comments and body language. Change your mindset and start focusing on the positives.
Be interested and interesting.
If you are truly interested in meeting people and are open to learning about who they are, they will get this in a first impression. You will notice the difference when you approach someone with a genuine interest. This will lead to better conversations and lasting connections.
