When the past hits….again A blast from the past, not always a good thing.
It can come from nowhere can’t it? Suddenly a trigger (whatever it may be) takes you right back to a past experience. This works both ways- positively and negatively, as in the experiences can be either. It can be a bolt from the blue, or a thought or feeling that can tip the balance and the memories come flooding back.
We all have the ability to not only compartmentalise something, or ‘park’ it for later (or never again) but also to disassociate ourselves as a form of protection. This has often been my choice- to step back, to move away from, to disassociate. Sometimes this can serve us, other times it can have rather a detrimental effect on our day.
A Blast From The Past
Today has been one of those days. I talk about the ‘Overwhelm’ state. I also talk a great deal about simple, quick and effective ways in which to move yourself past overwhelm and into a pro-active, focused, positive place. Today I have struggled to do that. Today I set my intention ‘I accept’. Today I have had a continuous inner battle going on between the want and desire to let it all go and accept that the thoughts, words and actions I am taking are what they are and trusting that ‘this too shall pass’. On the flip side of the coin, the bubbling of negative emotions has, at times been the stronger contender.
It’s incredible just how much of an impact negative emotion, negative memories have on us energetically.
When I was sharing my 30 day Miracle Morning journey with you all, I spoke on Day 25 about thoughts, words and actions and the knock on effect your thoughts have on the words you choose and the actions you take. I have worked hard today to make a very conscious effort to focus forward, because the past has been and gone and there is nothing we can do to change the events, however much we long to and wish we could. Does it serve us to focus on the past, relieving the pain, guilt, hurt and whatever other negative emotions might resonate? No, because all it does is drain us of energy and the negative thoughts become negative words which in turn can become negative actions. This is where I find myself today.
Sometimes we all have an overwhelm day, a wobble day or whatever you choose to call it. It is then our choice if we want to move towards the positive and the future, rather than looking to the past.
After the inner battle commenced I took some time out to do a couple of things to help realign my thoughts, words and actions into a more positive and mindful space. The Brene Brown TED talk is one of my favourites. The Power of Vulnerability. A MUST see talk. It gave me time to be present and listen to her words and relate them to what I was thinking, saying and doing.
I also took some time to be silent and to focus on my breath- this for me is so powerful. It allows for the realise of emotions. By acknowledging them and having an awareness around them you can once again make a choice- hold on to them or let them go. It really can be that simple.
Finally I ran myself a bath, relaxed and reminded myself that tomorrow is another day, another opportunity to start afresh.
