There are thousands of articles, hundreds of guided visualisations online and no end of books written all about the subject of Visualisation. So what is it and does it really work?
What is Visualization
Visualisation in its most basic terms is “The art or process of visualising. It is a technique involving focusing on positive mental images in order to achieve a particular goal”
A few months ago I had the privilege of hearing the wonderful Dame Kelly Holmes speak about her journey to that incredible achievement of the gold medal at the Athens Olympics 2004 for her 1500m race.
It dawned on me that her come back and her determination and pure strength was down to her ability to visualise. No matter where Dame Kelly Holmes found herself in her life, she never lost that vision of winning gold, even when many said she couldn’t and wouldn’t.
We hear it time and time again within the sporting arena. How the racing car driver focuses on the track and will spend time visualising the journey around the track with such precision and expertise that when he gets behind the wheel, in his mind the journey has been taken many many times previously.
Michael Jordan is fabulous for his many inspiring quotes and his grit and determination.
“I play to win, whether during practise or a real game”
“You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them”
I often talk about the power of the positive mindset and this goes hand in hand with the power of positive vizualisation.
I remember about 10 years ago I read the Law of Attraction and watched the infamous ‘The Secret’. I watched and nodded continuously thinking ‘well, of course, this makes total sense to me’. With the knowledge that the conscious mind is the goal setter and the unconscious mind the goal getter, I was ready to start visualising and setting myself goals for my life and my future. I REALLY visualised it. I believed it, I lived it and in time, those goals were achieved.
I got really specific with my visualisation. I wrote them down and kept going back to them time and time again to make sure they were congruent and real for me. Fast forward a couple of years….
In December 2007,I got married and at the same time found out I was pregnant. Arriving back from a 3-month tour of Africa and then onto America to get married, money was tight. With no job to come back to in the UK, nowhere to live and pregnant, it was time for me to visualise HARD! I have always had a deep belief that everything in my world would always be ok and that no matter what, I would survive and grow stronger.
Needless to say, we found a place to rent, work that made us happy and money was beginning to flow into our lives. 6 months later our daughter arrived. By December 2008, just one year later we had bought our first home together. As we started to pack up our very few belongings in order to move, I came across a number of notebooks. In one of them, I had made a rather detailed list of all the things I desired in the house that I wanted to buy. I took a moment to think about our new home, and I was able to tick off the majority of the list. Why? Well, I truly believe it was a great deal to do with the depth of my visualisation and belief in what I wanted to achieve.
7 years later and I want to be honest with you. I have fallen off the wagon when it comes to visualising. Why? Well there are no excuses. I could say ‘life got in the way’ and that would be a complete cop out…..so now it’s time for me to commit, really commit to getting back on track, because I know I have the ability to achieve anything I want, and guess what? You do too.
