A talent is having a natural ability to do something and a skill is all about the ability which comes from learning and practise.
So do you have a talent for public speaking? Are you someone that people look at and think “Wow, she/he is a natural at this”. If you do have a natural talent, do you also think that you don’t necessarily have to work at it?
If you are someone that believes public speaking can only be done well by those with a natural talent, are you doing yourself an injustice? Do you compare yourself to those that you perceive to have a ‘natural talent’ and tell yourself you wouldn’t be able to do what they do?
If you see it is a skill (which I personally believe it is) you will understand that everyone has to put in the time, effort and energy to improve, no matter if they have a natural talent for it or not.
A gymnast may have a natural talent and ability, but without learning and honing more skills, the gymnast will not get any better. It’s the same with anything. The more time and focus we put in, the more we will get out.
Talent can be a great foundation. Training is the key element to becoming an effective and powerful speaker.
Take any opportunity that is given to you to get up and speak. You’ve heard the saying ‘Practise makes perfect’. It takes more than a natural talent to connect with an audience and deliver an inspiring message. Developing your skill set will give you what you need to be the best speaker you can be.
